What is a Spinal Cord Injury?
A spinal cord injury usually starts with an abrupt, traumatic blow to the spine that dislocates or fractures vertebrae, the bones surrounding the spinal column. The damage begins at the moment of injury when displaced bone fragments, disc material, or ligaments bruise or tear into spinal cord tissue. Most injuries to the spinal cord don’t completely sever it. Instead, an injury most often causes fractures and compression of the vertebrae, which then damage and destroy axons. A spinal cord injury can destroy or damage a couple, many, or almost all of these axons.
Treatment of Spinal Cord Injuries
At Estey & Bomberger, we realize that by their very nature, spinal cord injuries are medical emergencies. Depending on the location and severity, a spinal cord injury may cause permanent disability due
to paralysis. Immediate treatment may reduce long-term effects and disability. Later treatment usually includes medicine and rehabilitation therapy.
A spinal cord injury has the potential to forever transform a victim’s way of life. In the years following a spinal cord injury, the patient may need long-term medical care and extensive rehabilitation. Depending on the location of the spinal cord injury and whether it is complete or incomplete, recovery may take months, years, or may never happen. A patient will also need help adapting to paralysis and adjusting to life in a wheelchair.
