Rocky Mountain Bicycles Recall Attorneys

On March 10, 2011, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Rocky Mountain Bicycles is recalling about 325 bicycles due to a problem with the front fork steering tube. The bicycles were manufactured by Procycle Group of Canada, and distributed by Rocky Mountain Bicycles of Canada. According to a CPSC news release, only bicycles with certain serial numbers were recalled, including the 2008 Solo CX model (color: gun metal gray), the 2009 Solo CX (color: white), the 2010 Solo CX (color: white), the 2008 Solo CXD (color: gun metal gray), the 2009 Solo CXD (color: titanium silver), the 209 Solo CXR (color: black), and 2010 Metropolis SEA (color: black).

The bicycles were sold at bicycles stores and other specialty retailers nationwide and on the website backcountry.com from June 2007 through November 2010 for between $1,300 and $1,700. More information and photos can be found on the CPSC Website.

Rocky Mountain Bicycles Recall — Reported Injuries

According to the CPSC, the bicycle manufacturer has received four reports of injuries, including three reports of cuts and scrapes and one report of a broken wrist. It is important to note that many times injuries go unreported because bicycle riders do not realize that their accident was caused by a defect in the bicycle itself. Consumers who have been injured by a defective Rocky Mountain Bicycles or any other product should consider reporting their injury to the CPSC at SaferProducts.gov.

Bicycle Defects and Manufacturer Injury Liability

Design and manufacturing defects, such as the fork steering tube defect reported in this most recent recall, have the potential to cause very serious injury or even death. Bicycle manufacturers have a responsibility to manufacturer safe products that won’t fail under reasonable, foreseeable use. When a defect causes a cyclist to lose control and crash with a vehicle or stationary object, such as a light pole or a parked car, the manufacturer of the bicycle – and other parties in the chain of distribution – may be liable. Damages awarded in a defective products claim may include medical treatment expenses, lost earnings, loss of earning capacity, pain and suffering, and other damages.
